Stealing Signs

Stealing Signs began as homage to my grandfather upon his passing in 2007. Intended as a thank you letter, I began illustrating the countless stories of baseball legends past he would tell me time and time again while playing catch on Saturday mornings. Two years later, in response to the overwhelming success of Stealing Signs, I extended the series with the release of Stealing Signs II. This time paying tribute to my father, a man whose similar tall tales of larger-than-life hockey greats fascinated me as a young hockey enthusiast.

Since the beginning, this series has generated something I never expected; ongoing correspondence with others who share a similar attachment to sports stories of bygone eras. Since 2005, you have shared personal stories about your fathers, husbands wives, children and the role sports plays in their lives. These conversations and new friendships have evolved Stealing Signs to what it is today: The preservation of memories we collectively hold dear as American sports fans.

To honor these stories, I have decided to end the series with a third and final installment dedicated to you: the fan. State by state, I plan to bring your stories and memories to life as best I can, leaving it in your hands to help decide who makes the final "line up. This road trip is going to be challenging and will take years to complete, but illustrating your stories state by state is the best way I can think to pay tribute to what this series has become. I welcome your stories, and I hope you enjoy it.

Please check back often for updates. If you have a question about the series, commission inquiry, or a story to contribute, please email me.

Your friend,

Stealing Signs III

Stealing Signs is an ongoing online art exhibition celebrating the untold stories of professional athletes from past to present.

Beyond statistics, themes of personal struggle commonly appear in the paintings in an attempt to recognize the sacrifices these players made for their beloved game as well as their personal lives away from the playing field.
